There can be a lot to remember when preparing for a babysitting job, so use the information below to remind you of what you need to know. Remember, it takes about 10 minutes with a repeat employer and 30 minutes with a new employer for you to discuss what you need to know to take care of the children and to learn the rules of the house.

SAFE SITTER® HELP SHEET

Before the employer leaves you in charge, make sure to take notes on the following information:

  • Employer name
  • Address
  • Cell phone number
  • Alternate phone number
  • Back-up adult name and phone number
  • Emergency Services: 9-1-1
  • Poison Center: 800-222-1222

Ask the employer to take you on a tour of the house. Note the following information:

 

  • Fire escape route and outside meeting place
  • Phone locations
  • Locks
  • Alarm systems
  • Children’s rooms
  • Off-limit rooms
  • Diapering supplies
  • First aid supplies
  • Flashlight

The BEST babysitters know the child’s routines. Before the employer leaves the house, ask about the following:

  • B-Bedtime
  • E-Entertainment
  • S-Snacks/Meals
  • T-Toileting
  • Allergies/medicine
  • Ideas for comfort/behavior tips

Before the employer leaves, be sure to ask about house rules and other responsibilities. Take notes about:

  • Rules for electronic games and devices
  • The TV shows/movies/other entertainment children are allowed to watch
  • Rules for outside play and using play equipment
  • Pet routines or duties
  • Gun safety (make sure any guns in the home are locked up)
