Safe Sitter® Help Sheet

There can be a lot to remember when preparing for a babysitting job, so use the information below to remind you of what you need to know. Remember, it takes about 10 minutes with a repeat employer and 30 minutes with a new employer for you to discuss what you need to know to take care of the children and to learn the rules of the house.

Before the employer leaves you in charge, make sure to take notes on the following information:

  • Employer name
  • Address
  • Cell phone number
  • Alternate phone number
  • Back-up adult name and phone number
  • Emergency Services: 9-1-1
  • Poison Center: 800-222-1222

Ask the employer to take you on a tour of the house. Note the following information:

  • Fire escape route and outside meeting place
  • Phone locations
  • Locks
  • Alarm systems
  • Children’s rooms
  • Off-limit rooms
  • Diapering supplies
  • First aid supplies
  • Flashlight

The BEST babysitters know the child’s routines. Before the employer leaves the house, ask about the following:

  • B-Bedtime
  • E-Entertainment
  • S-Snacks/Meals
  • T-Toileting
  • Allergies/medicine
  • Ideas for comfort/behavior tips

Before the employer leaves, be sure to ask about house rules and other responsibilities. Take notes about:

  • Rules for electronic games and devices
  • The TV shows/movies/other entertainment children are allowed to watch
  • Rules for outside play and using play equipment
  • Pet routines or duties
  • Gun safety (make sure any guns in the home are locked up)
