Safe Sitter® Babysitting Course

Safe Sitter® is designed to prepare students in grades 6-8 to be safe when they’re home alone, watching younger siblings, or babysitting. The Instructor-led class is filled with fun games and role-playing activities.

Course Content

Safety Skills

Students learn how to prevent unsafe situations and what to do when faced with dangers such as power failures or weather emergencies.

Child Care Skills

Students learn tips to manage behavior that will help them stay in control of themselves and the children in their care. Students also learn the ages and stages of child development, as well as practice diapering.

First Aid & Rescue Skills

Learning skills such as choking rescue and CPR is often students’ favorite part of the class. Students also learn a system to help them assess and respond to injuries and illnesses. (CPR is a modular option that may be included.)

Life & Business Skills

The ability to screen jobs, discuss fees, and greet employers will set students up for success now and in the future. Students practice these skills through various role plays.

The Safe Sitter® Babysitting Course is a modular program that can be taught in one-day or in shorter time periods throughout the course of several days. Your dedicated Program Support Specialist will help create a schedule that works best for you and your students!

(includes two 5-minute breaks)

In addition to the required modules, the Safe Sitter® Babysitting Course offers a variety of optional modules that allow you to customize your class experience — and we highly recommend adding Twenty Questions, a fun review activity that reinforces key concepts, if your schedule allows!

Founded in 1980, Safe Sitter® is the only national nonprofit training program exclusively devoted to preparing young teens to be safe in unsupervised settings, whether home alone, sibling sitting or babysitting.

The Safe Sitter® Babysitting Courses is designed exclusively for young teens in grades 6 – 8, and covers the following areas: safety skills, child care skills, first aid & rescue skills, and life & business skills. Safe Sitter® Babysitting Courses are Instructor-led and interactive, with hands-on demonstrations and skills practice using soft-bodied dolls and medical manikins.

Safe Sitter® courses are designed to be highly interactive. The Instructor Manual includes a script for you to use as you teach.

The teaching strategies utilized throughout the course include:
