Safe Sitter® > Get Started

It is easy and affordable to get started with Safe Sitter® to teach home alone safety skills as well as babysitting training. There is no registration fee; instead, you purchase course materials and register for Instructor training. As a Safe Sitter® Provider, you set and collect all course fees and manage class registrations. Get started today!

Step One: Decide which programs you will offer.

To being, determine which Safe Sitter® programs will best serve your community. Our programs allow you to serve upper elementary students staying home alone, middle school students babysitting, and adults becoming grandparents. Additionally, each program has required course materials, and comprehensive courses require Instructor training.

Introductory Programs

For those looking for simpler options, introductory programs allow any adult who enjoys teaching preteens and teens to facilitate programs on home alone safety and child care techniques. You do not need to be a Safe Sitter® Instructor to teach these programs.

Safe@Home

Teach students in grades 4-6 to stay safe while home alone with this 90-minute program. In this course, students practice safe habits, learn how to prevent unsafe situations, and handle dangers like power failures or weather emergencies. The program introduces the Safe Sitter® First Aid Chart and a system for assessing and responding to injuries or illnesses.

Intro To Safe Babysitting

This 60-minute course helps students in grades 6-8 learn how to care for children safely. In these courses, students learn the ages and stages of child development, practice diapering, and gain tips for staying in control of themselves and the children they watch. Completing this course meets some requirements for the Girl Scout Cadette Babysitter Badge.

Comprehensive Programs

Taught exclusively by certified Safe Sitter® Instructors, comprehensive Safe Sitter® Programs prepare participants to provide the best and safest care for young children. To register as a Safe Sitter® Instructor, you must purchase course materials, be certified in CPR, and have access to CPR manikins. Learn more about Instructor qualifications and training.

Safe Sitter® Essentials

This course is designed to prepare students in grades 6-8 to be safe when they are home alone, watching younger siblings, or babysitting. In these courses, students learn to practice safety skills, handle emergencies, care for children, and treat illnesses or injuries. Some classes include CPR training. Additionally, students develop business skills such as screening jobs, setting wages, and working with employers.

Grandparents: Getting Started

This course trains adults to provide excellent care for their grandchildren, whether babysitting occasionally or providing regular care. Participants learn current child care practices, first aid, and behavior management strategies. They also gain tips for supporting their children as parents and fostering positive relationships with them.

Step Two: Order materials or complete an application.

Introductory programs can be ordered online and do not require Instructor training. Every participant in Safe@Home and Intro to Safe Babysitting must receive a student booklet. Each order includes a Digital Presentation and a Facilitator’s Guide for teaching the course.

To offer comprehensive programs, complete an online application. Approved applicants complete the second portion of the application, sign a Provider Agreement, submit payment, and complete an orientation. Lastly, visit our FAQs for answers to our most asked questions.
