Additional Programs
by Safe Sitter®

Safe@Home

Designed for students in grades 4-6, Safe@Home is a 90-minute program that teaches students how to practice safe habits, how to prevent unsafe situations, and what to do when faced with dangers such as power failures or weather emergencies. Students are also introduced to the Safe Sitter® First Aid Chart and learn a system to help them assess and respond to injuries and illnesses. Facilitators of Safe@Home are not required to be Safe Sitter® Instructors.

GRANDPARENTS: GETTING STARTED

Taught by certified Safe Sitter® Instructors, participants will learn how to provide the best and safest care for their grandchildren, including the latest information on caring for infants and children as well as managing their behavior. Life-saving skills such as choking rescue, first aid, and injury management are also covered. Learning tips on creating a good relationship from the start, as well as learning when to say no to babysitting requests, will help grandparents navigate their relationship with their children while creating lasting memories with their grandchildren.

  • Students & Parents

Does each Student Handbook come with a completion card?

Yes. We recommend ordering a few extra cards in case you misspell a student’s name.

How long does it take to get an order?

All orders submitted by 1 PM EST are shipped the next business day from Wisconsin. A $5 surcharge is added to all residential deliveries. Expedited shipping and shipping outside the contiguous U.S. are available at an additional charge.

When ordering Safe Sitter® products for your classes, be sure to allow enough time for your own organization to process the purchase order.

Safe Sitter® Providers should order products at least two weeks prior to classes. If your budget allows for larger orders, you’ll save on shipping fees and be able to accommodate last minute registrations.

Please email orders@safesitter.org with any questions regarding orders.

Online Order Form

What do I need to send Safe Sitter® National headquarters after teaching a class?

Please submit the Completed Class Report within two weeks after the class ends. The information on this report allows us to keep accurate records and provide you with appropriate support.

Completed Class Report

How long should I keep registration forms?

If your organization has a record retention policy, follow that. For those without an applicable policy, we suggest keeping registration forms for seven years.

How do I share student success stories with you?

We love to hear about Safe Sitter® Graduates! Use our Story Submission Form to share their experience with your Program Support Specialist.

Story Submission Form

Do you have any resources that I can use to help Instructors teach Safe Sitter®?

Instructors may gain access to the “Instructor Resources” section of the Safe Sitter® website once they’ve completed training and submitted their signed agreements to National Headquarters. Once we’ve received their agreements, they’re emailed a hyperlink to create a username and password.

How can I train more Instructors?

To register Instructors for training, complete the Instructor Training Registration section on the order form. Each Instructor receives an Instructor Manual and Instructor tote bag, as well as access to digital Instructor Manuals on the Safe Sitter® app. Instructor training can be completed online. Groups of five or more Instructors can train through an in-person workshop.

Can Instructors teach at other locations?

Instructors must have permission from their Site Coordinator and teaching organization (if applicable) and must follow the Youth Protection Policy to teach at other locations.

How should we respond to parents seeking a list of babysitters?

For the safety of our graduates, we do not encourage them to babysit for strangers. Encourage inquiring parents to send a responsible young teen—neighbor, friend, or relative—to a Safe Sitter® class.

What should I do if I am contacted to teach a class for a small group such as a Girl Scout Troop?

We encourage you to work with individual groups, such as Girl Scout Troops, seeking private classes. If you cannot accommodate a private class, work with the group leader to register the group in one of your scheduled classes.

Babysitter Boss

Safe Sitter® has a YouTube series, Babysitter Boss, which talks about everything from cuts and scrapes to negotiating a babysitting fee. The videos are also a great way to complement the in-class guided discussion you have with students.

For example, students can watch “Diaper Changing the Easy Way” before beginning the diapering activity in Child Care Skills. There are also videos on handling nose bleeds, getting kids to listen, and managing behavior problems that can be incorporated into the class.

Remind your students to subscribe to Babysitter Boss at bit.ly/babysitterboss to see additional videos.

Safe Sitter® Executive Director

Thank you for offering Safe Sitter®!

Safe Sitter® was founded in 1980 by renowned pediatrician Patricia A. Keener, M.D. after a colleague’s 18-month-old choked to death while under an adult sitter’s care. Troubled by the lack of educational programming for young sitters, Dr. Keener developed Safe Sitter® as a medically accurate instructional program designed for young teens.

Today, more than 35,000 students are trained each year to be safe while home alone, watching younger brothers and sisters, or babysitting. Safe Sitter® is now a nationwide network of nearly 3,000 caring Instructors invested in teaching safety skills, child care skills, first aid & rescue skills, and life & business skills to young teens in their communities.

Thank you for being part of this effort. You are making a difference to teens and families in your community!
